California Lawn Mowing Guide

California is really two lawn regions. The warm, dry south runs Bermuda and St. Augustine; the cooler, wetter north runs tall fescue. What they share is the state’s defining constraint — water restrictions — so the winning move everywhere is to mow a little higher, shade the soil, and never cut a drought-stressed lawn in midday heat.

What grass do you have?

Mowing heights for California grasses

Grass Mowing height Notes
Bermuda 1–2 in South; raise slightly under heat stress
St. Augustine 3.5–4 in South/coastal; never scalp
Tall fescue 3–4 in North; keep at 3.5–4 in in summer to conserve moisture

Mowing higher shades the soil and cuts watering needs — a real lever under drought rules.
