Best Lawn Fertilizer Spreader Settings Guide

Getting your spreader settings right is the difference between a lush, even lawn and streaky, burned-out patches. Most fertilizer bags list settings for Scotts spreaders, but if you own a different brand — or you’re applying a product that doesn’t list your spreader — you’re left guessing.

This guide provides spreader settings for the most popular fertilizer and spreader combinations, plus a calibration method for any product on any spreader.

Understanding Spreader Types

Broadcast (Rotary) Spreaders

Broadcast spreaders fling material in a wide arc using a spinning disc. They cover ground faster and are the preferred choice for most homeowners.

Best for: Yards over 2,000 sq ft, granular fertilizer, pre-emergent herbicides

Top pick: Scotts Elite Spreader — dual-rotor for even edge control

Drop Spreaders

Drop spreaders release product directly below the hopper through adjustable openings. They’re more precise but slower.

Best for: Small yards, precise application near beds and walkways, seed

Top pick: Scotts Classic Drop Spreader

How to Calibrate Any Spreader

When you can’t find the right setting, calibrate it yourself. It takes 10 minutes:

What You Need

Step-by-Step Calibration

  1. Read the bag rate. Find the recommended application rate (e.g., “4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft”)

  2. Measure a test strip. Measure a 100 sq ft area on your lawn or driveway (e.g., 10 ft × 10 ft). For a broadcast spreader, measure the effective spread width and mark a test lane.

  3. Weigh the product. For a 100 sq ft test area at 4 lbs/1,000 sq ft, you need 0.4 lbs of product. Weigh out slightly more than you need.

  4. Start at a low setting. Set your spreader to a low-medium setting and make one pass over your test area at a normal walking pace.

  5. Weigh what’s left. Subtract from your starting weight to find how much you applied.

  6. Adjust and repeat. If you applied too little, increase the setting. Too much, decrease it. Repeat until you hit the target rate.

Pro Tips for Even Application

Common Spreader Mistakes

Streaky application: Usually caused by insufficient overlap between passes. On broadcast spreaders, the outside edge of each pass should reach the wheel marks of the previous pass.

Burning at turn points: Close the hopper when you slow down or turn. Product dumps at double rate when you stop moving.

Uneven flow: Make sure the product is dry. Damp granules clump and don’t flow evenly through the spreader openings.

Wrong walking speed: Walking too fast under-applies; too slow over-applies. Maintain a consistent, comfortable pace.

Spreader Maintenance

A well-maintained spreader applies more evenly:
